Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 35 games

Only once before in Albion’s history have they had as few as 35 points from 35 games in the second tier, and that campaign ended in the club’s only relegation to the third tier. Unless something dramatically changes in the next week or two, a second such drop will be inevitable.

Caretaker boss, James Morrison, effectively threw the players under the bus in his post match interview after they put in a pathetic display against a very poor Oxford United team, singling out Charlie Taylor, Krystian Bielik and Max O’Leary before criticising the group as a collective. Only Mikey Johnston, who had to leave early in the game with an injury, and his replacement Ollie Bostock escaped his ire.

It’s about time. Perhaps Mozza is the first head coach to have the freedom to be able to be so frank – a head coach will normally shield his players in public as open criticism can have undesired effects in the dressing room. Mozza has nothing to lose and the players needed to be told. He was very clear that the players were appropriately prepared and did not follow the game plan that he set out – it’s a damning verdict from a man who has been behind the scenes as the club has cartwheeled towards the bottom three. I’m sure that Mason and Ramsay will have wanted to have similar outbursts.

Whether it will be enough to turn things around, or if there is another experienced head to come in to give Morrison a hand, we will have to wait and see. Currently, the only thing to look forward to is a few ground ticks in League One.
